For the past 18 years, Cynthia McFadden has travelled the world reporting for ABC News. Her distinguished work has won many of broadcasting’s most coveted awards including the Emmy, the Peabody, the Dupont and the Foreign Press Award. For the past seven years she has been the co-anchor of the celebrated news broadcast, Nightline.

Much of McFadden’s investigative reporting has focused on human rights abuses, particularly those faced by women and children.  She shed new light on the international trafficking of children in India and women from the former Soviet Union; and abuses in the mental health system in Mexico and the U.S.  She also led the first network investigation into one of America’s darkest secrets, the forced sterilization of 60,000 to 100,000 American citizens during World War II.  She has also tackled a variety of social issues from girl gangs in Los Angeles to Medicaid fraud in Miami.  McFadden’s powerful investigation into the pollution of the ground water in Hinkley, California helped expose a massive cover-up by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company leading to an historic $333 million dollar civil settlement.  The case subsequently became the basis for the Academy Award-winning film “Erin Brockovich.”

A graduate of the Columbia University School of Law, McFadden is known for her incisive reporting on a wide range of legal topics. She has covered hundred of court cases ranging from the O.J. Simpson trial to the Bosnian War Crimes proceedings. She was the legal editor and narrator of the ground-breaking series “Inside the Jury Room” which made television history as the first to broadcast jury deliberations in a death penalty case. McFadden’s hour-long documentary “Judgment at Midnight” won critical acclaim for its intimate and compelling look at the lives that intersected on Louisiana’s death row, as did her reporting on the 40th anniversary of Brown vs. School Board.

She has interviewed a variety of world leaders including the presidents of the United States, Pakistan, Rwanda and Chile and the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Her interview with President George W. Bush was the only extensive network interview the President ever gave on his faith. She filed a series of extensive interviews with Senator Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign of 2008 and subsequently travelled with her around the world once she became Secretary of State (including a memorable joint interview with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates).

She has reported from a wide variety of hot spots around the world including Haiti, Sierra Leone, Bosnia, El Salvador, Rwanda, South Africa, Pakistan, India, Russia, Cuba, Liberia and China.
