Joe Torre was named manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, becoming the 26th manager in team history. In his First Season with Los Angeles, Torre guided the Dodgers to a Division Title, cementing his reputation as one the great managers of the game. Prior to the joining the Dodgers, Torre spent the past 12 seasons as manager of the New York Yankees.
Joe Torre was named the manager of the New York Yankees on November 2, 1995. In becoming the 31st manager in Yankees history, he joins Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, and Dallas Green as the fourth manager to wear both the Yankees and Mets uniforms.
Joe Torre led the 1996 Yankees to their first World Series Championship since 1978. Joe Torre accomplished this feat again in 1998 and 1999, solidifying the Yankees' claim to the title "team of the decade." Joe Torre was named Man of the Year by The Sporting News and Co-Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
In his 17-year playing career, Joe Torre played for Milwaukee, Atlanta, St. Louis and the Mets. In 1971, Joe Torre was the National League MVP as a member of the Cardinals.
Joe Torre made his managerial debut on May 31, 1977 when he became the first player-manager in the Major Leagues since 1959. Joe Torre is the only person ever to be named both the MVP and Manager of the Year.
Torre battled prostate cancer in 1999. He suffered no symptoms yet it was thankfully caught in a routine check-up. Torre joined forces with the Prostate Cancer Foundation to help shut out America's second-most common cancer. He has testified before Congress and has been instrumental in raising funds for improved prostate cancer treatments.
On December 14, 2005, Torre carried the Olympic Torch in Florence, Italy, running it 400 yards, ending at the world famous Ponte Vecchio bridge. The 2006 Winter Olympics began February 10, in Turin, Italy.
